One of the first decisions you will have to make when starting a web based business (besides your business strategy) is the domain name. Choosing the right name, unless you are going to be running multiple websites is extremely important. What many home based web start ups forget to see is that the name - while targeted to your business should also be flexible.

Don't choose a domain like airconditioningsystems.com if you think you may be selling heating systems also. You want to allow for your business to grow and not worry about the limitations of a name.

will allow you to check out website names for free and then register one when you are ready. Domains are pretty cheap now, but you want to regsiter your site with a reputable company and one that has an easy account manager as you will most likely want to switch it to a hosting company when you are ready. A reputable company will also alert you to if and when the domain is about to expire - which is very important.

Choose a .com if you can. Even if it's not the name you want exactly, dot com names are just better and easy for customers to remember. If you are looking to really trademark a brand name like Monster or Google, then it is adviseble to secure the dot net and dot biz, etc. so copycat sites don't grab those extentions. Choosing your domain should be a slow process. You need to think it through and remember to keep it open to other home based or small Internet businesses you may want to start.

Taking a padded paper or using a computer documnet to write possible domain website names over a period of time as you think of them is a good idea.
